Message to the Euro-Arab Conference

In April 1977 a Euro-Arab meeting was held in Florence, attended by men in the cultural field and members of Parliament. The meeting was in the spirit of La Pira’s own initiatives, but he himself could not take part on account of his health problems.

He did, however, wish to be present with a message in which he said once more that the problem of the Middle East admitted of no other solution than that of negotiation and dialogue; but he also maintained the essential role in such a dialogue of the Palestinian people, thitherto represented more or less faithfully by the governments of the Arab countries.

Also of importance was the consideration that the process recently brought to a successful conclusion at Helsinki would remain incomplete unless the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean were reached by “the wave of negotiation”, as La Pira had expressed it on another occasion.
